What you need to make a call from a computer

A microphone

The one built into your laptop is fine. For a long call, plug in earbuds so the other person doesn't hear their own voice echo back. Test your mic

A browser

Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari, on Windows, macOS, ChromeOS or Linux. You're reading this in one.

An internet connection

Voice uses far less data than video. If a video call works where you are, a phone call will too. Run a speed test

Skype was the usual answer until Microsoft shut it down in May 2025. Here's what's left, and where each one stops.

If your phone is on the desk and your plan covers the call, Phone Link or your Mac will do the job for nothing extra. CallSpark is for when that falls apart: a flat battery, no signal indoors, or a number abroad your carrier charges a fortune to reach.

If something goes wrong

They can't hear you? Check these first

The browser blocked the mic

Click the icon to the left of the address bar, set Microphone to Allow, and reload the page.

The wrong mic is picked

A laptop plugged into a dock or monitor often switches to the webcam's mic, which may be across the room. Choose the right input in your sound settings.

Bluetooth sounds muffled

Most Bluetooth headphones drop to phone-quality audio while their mic is on. Listen through the headphones and talk into the laptop's mic, or use wired earbuds.

FAQ

Calling from a computer: common questions

Can I call a phone from my computer for free?

Your first CallSpark call is free: up to 59 seconds, once per account, on routes that cost $0.025 a minute or less. After that, every service charges for calls to real phone numbers, because a phone network carries the last part of the call. The one big exception is Google Voice, which is free from the US to US and Canadian numbers.

Do I need my phone nearby?

No. The call goes from your browser over the internet, so your phone can be switched off, flat, or in another country. That's the difference from Phone Link and Mac calling, which route the call through your phone.

How do I make a call from my laptop without a headset?

Use the built-in microphone and speakers. It works fine. If the other person hears an echo, turn your volume down a little or plug in any earbuds with a mic.

Does it work on a Mac, Chromebook or Linux?

Yes. CallSpark is a website, so any computer with a current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari can make a call. There's nothing to install, which also means nothing for IT to approve on a work laptop.

What number does the other person see?

By default, a caller ID we assign to your account for free. If you verify your own mobile number, people see that instead and know it's you.

Can I call a mobile abroad from my computer?

Yes, mobiles and landlines in 230+ countries. The rate shows before the call connects. In many countries a mobile costs more per minute than a landline, so check both if you have a choice.

Can people call me back on my computer?

Not on the free caller ID. CallSpark is set up for outgoing calls. If you need a number people can ring, you can buy a virtual number, and calls to it ring in your browser.
