How to dial international numbers

Tell us where you are and type the number. You'll get the exact digits to dial, with the exit code and country code already in place.

Pick the flag for the country you're calling, then type the number with or without its leading 0.

Your dialing sequence appears here as soon as the number is complete.

The three parts of an international number

  1. 1. Your exit code

It depends on where you're standing, not who you're calling. From the US it's 011, from the UK it's 00. On a mobile, a + does the same job everywhere.

  2. 2. The country code

One to three digits for the country you're calling: 44 for the UK, 91 for India, 1 for the US and Canada. Every country code is listed here.

  3. 3. The number, minus its leading 0

The 0 that starts many local numbers is only for calls inside that country. Drop it after the country code: 020 7946 0958 in London becomes 44 20 7946 0958. Italy is the odd one out and keeps it.

Questions about dialing abroad

What is an exit code?

It's the prefix that tells your phone company the call is leaving the country. It depends on where you're calling from, not where you're calling: 011 from the US and Canada, 00 from the UK and most of Europe, Asia and Africa, 0011 from Australia, 010 from Japan.

What does the + at the start of a number mean?

The + stands for whatever exit code your current country uses. On a mobile you can dial +, then the country code and number, and it works from anywhere. Hold the 0 key to type it. Most landlines don't accept +, so use the exit code there.

Do I keep the 0 at the start of the number?

Usually not. Many countries write local numbers with a leading 0 (the UK's 020, India's 098...), but you drop it when you add the country code. So 020 7946 0958 becomes +44 20 7946 0958. Italy is the main exception: its landline 0 stays.

How do I call the US from abroad?

Dial your country's exit code, then 1, then the 10-digit number. From the UK that's 00 1 202 555 0143. From a mobile, +1 202 555 0143 works anywhere. From Canada and other +1 countries you skip the exit code and just dial 1 and the number.

Why won't my international call go through?

The usual reasons: international calling is switched off on your plan, you kept the leading 0, or you're calling a toll-free number, which often can't be reached from abroad. Hotel and office phones may also need an extra digit, often 9, to get an outside line first.

Can I call abroad without dialing codes?

Yes. CallSpark calls any mobile or landline from your browser: pick the country, type the number, press Call. The per-minute price shows before you dial, and your first call is free.
