Find out if a number is valid for its country, whether it's a mobile or a landline, and how to write it for a contact list, a form or an API.

Pick the country for local numbers. Numbers starting with + set it automatically.

The result appears as you type.

What this checks, and what it can't

It checks

  • The number of digits for that country
  • Whether the range is actually in use
  • Mobile, landline, toll-free or premium rate
  • The correct international formats

It can't tell you

  • Whether the line is connected right now
  • Who owns the number
  • Which carrier it's on today (numbers get ported)

Need the digits to dial it from where you are? Use the international dialing calculator.

Phone number validator questions

How does the phone number validator work?

It checks the digits against each country's official numbering plan, using the same rules Android phones use. That tells you whether the number could exist, which country it belongs to, and what kind of line the range is for.

Does it tell me if the number is in service?

No. A number can be valid and still disconnected, and checking that means contacting the carrier, which this tool doesn't do. It also can't tell you who owns the number or which carrier it's on today.

Why does it say 'mobile or landline'?

The US, Canada and a few other countries give out mobile and landline numbers from the same ranges, so the number itself can't tell them apart.

What is E.164 format?

The international standard for storing phone numbers: a +, the country code, then the number with no spaces or leading 0, like +442079460958. It's what most apps and APIs expect.

Is the number I type sent anywhere?

No. The check runs entirely in your browser, and nothing is stored or uploaded.
